The Raranga Matihiko programme
Raranga Matihiko | Weaving Digital Futures
Raranga Matihiko delivers innovative digital technology learning to those with limited digital learning opportunities and is part of the Ministry of Education Digital Technologies for All Equity Fund initiative.
Working directly with students and their teachers, our specialist learning facilitators will deliver the new Digital Technologies and Hangarau Matihiko curricula content. Our learning facilitators will co-design the programme with each classroom teacher/kaiako to ensure the programme is tailored to support existing classroom learning. This comprehensive programme is delivered over the course of a ten-week period per year including a two-day visit to the local museum, visits to each class and online support.
Available now to decile 1-3 schools and all Kura in Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Auckland and Waitangi/Northland regions. The programme is provided at no cost to the school including transportation to and from the local museum.

What this programme will look like through the eyes of learners and schools?
We have designed the programme with students and their teachers at its core. Working through a user-centred design process, we will discover what stories students want to tell, and then empower them to select and use a range of digital technologies to tell them. The context might be local, regional, or national, and the story might come from the past, the present, or a vision for the future. Regardless, we will find engaging contexts which provide authentic learning opportunities. Accordingly, we have not fixed the modules or courses that will be provided (eg, coding at Year 9), as this goes against our intention to give students agency in contributing to their learning. The programme your school will receive across a ten week period each year:
First year:
- One-day planning at the museum with kaiako to ensure the programme complements the class curriculum. TRD costs covered for this day.
- Two-day class visit to the museum where students have the opportunity to engage with digital technologies, the curriculum, museum collections, exhibitions and specialist staff.
- Two school-based visits from our facilitation team to continue to support students’ learning.
- Online support via email and one online virtual visit.
Second Year:
- Planning at the museum with kaiako to ensure the programme complements the class curriculum.
- One-day class visit to the museum where students have the opportunity to engage with digital technologies, the curriculum, museum collections, and exhibitions and specialist staff.
- Two school-based visits from our facilitation team to continue to support students’ learning.
- Online support via email and one online virtual visit.
